I have seen a lot of screenshots with really nice icons on the desktop replacing computer, IE, etc. They are not part of an IP theme. For instance, I have seen fans and butterflies. My question is: do I have to use one of OD programs to apply these icons? Or can I just apply them through IP, replacing the those icons with the other ones? I do have OD, so if i need one of those programs, I will install it...just don't know what I need to do.

Thanks for any of your help!

~No Jazzy...you dont need OD ...if your talking about desktop icons..just Right click on the Icon and go to properties. You can change them that way. But if you want to just change on the Start menu..Open IP...Click on " Icons and Cursors " Highlight each icon one at a time then click on bottom " change icon " then...go to either your icons in IP or any ICO file..click on it , then apply.
You can apply one theme...then change the few icons you want to change then save it as a theme in IP by clicking up top under " file " to save as:
I dont bother cos its pretty fast to change them once you do it a few times.
Hope this answered your question.
If your referring to the super large icons you see on desktops..most of those are through desktopx ...You can use the Object Dock icons PNG's through there. I barely remember how cos I never have icons on desktop.

Fairyy, The icons I am referring to are My Computer, Network Places, and Internet Explorer..they really aren't icons...they are hard-wired...lol. Anyway, they have no option to change an icon. I guess I was referring to the large icons.

I have mine changed....on my start menu by doing it the way I explained to you in IP ( I removed them from my desktop long ago ) ...I change the recycle bin in icon packager with Icons I made myself. Recycle bin has no option to change the icon in its properties either... so I change it by clicking on the " Icons and Cursors " Using IP I also changed : my computer, run, Internet Explorer..try changing them in IP ...I can send you a screen shot of IP to show you where ..did you d/loaded the new version of IP ? Either way, you can change them with old version also. Just the new version is easier.

jazzymjr,

To change icon for My Computer, My Documents, My Network Places, and Recycle Bin - you can do the following:

Right-click desktop > Properties > Desktop tab > Customize Desktop button > select icon you want to change > Change Icon button > Browse to ".ico" image you want to use > OK button, then "Apply" button in Desktop Properties dialog.

Repeat for other listed icons.

Internet Explorer is indeed a specialized icon, and you would need to create a shortcut on the desktop and use the Properties dialog to change it - though the shortcut overlay will remain.

I hope this helps.

Corky,
Thanks for the info. I think I will just stick to the icons that come with the IP theme...sounds like too much of a hassle. I would have to shrink the icons down that I want to use, and then there would be no point in doing it. The icons I wanted to use are 128 x 128.
Thank you for taking the time to answer me.

Fairyy,
Sorry, I didn't see you're additional post. I was wondering if I could do it in IP. But, they would have to be the same size as in the IP theme, right? I was wanting to put the big ones on the desktop. My recycle bin is in my sidebar, so that is not an issue...I just want to do the other three.

Thanks for helping me with this.

I was wanting to put the big ones on the desktop.

desktopx - create new objects -set them to go where you want - use big honking pngs.

desktopx - hide desktop icons (use the objects instead).

You can even use animated.

You can find some good ones in Misc Icons - can also use the objectdock icons. or create your own.

iconx - go in and adjust the size - can opt for always same size or just on mouse over.

can change the icon in iconx using external image.

Yeah Jazzy, IP you get 2 choices , large and small. Bichur gave you the directions for the Big icons you see others using..I knew it was through desktopx...and Corky provided the way I was trying to remember..but like I said, I removed all Icons from my desktop so long ago...I use Object Dock if I want Icons or just " right click " program. With desktopX you can add sounds when you mouse over the icons too. Although it gets a bit noisy.

Bichur and Fairyy,

Thanks for your input. I was without internet access last evening, and just got it fixed a little bit ago. So, I did some reading with the documentation I had downloaded earlier and discovered I had to do that through DesktopX. DesktopX eats a lot of resources on my computer, so I will just use the IP theme icons like I have done in the past.

Don't forget IconX - DX doesn't have to be running.

You can resize your icons and get zoom effect on mouseover.

You can also use external image in iconx properties.

Bichur,

Oh, I didn't know that! Okay, I will try that. Thanks!
